I designed and illustrated a set of three communication diary covers for Chalmers Road School, a K-12 specialist school supporting students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities, including those with autism and physical needs.
The diaries play an essential role as a daily communication tool between school and home, acting as a voice for students by sharing their learning, wellbeing and key updates with families. As part of a broader redesign of the diary interiors in collaboration with parents, the covers were reimagined to better reflect the needs of the school community.
Three distinct versions were developed – Primary, High School and Non-English Speaking Background – each responding to different stages of the student journey and the diversity of the school. While the covers share a consistent visual language, they are differentiated through the age of the illustrated students and the use of background colour.
The designs were created in consultation with the school, with a focus on brightening the diaries and making them more engaging for families.
